Background of the Study
Terrorism threats have increasingly become a central concern for communities across the globe, affecting public perceptions of security and well-being. In Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State, the fear of terrorism—whether actual or perceived—has influenced how citizens view the effectiveness of their security apparatus. The constant media coverage of terrorist incidents and the rapid spread of information via social networks contribute to heightened anxiety and a sense of vulnerability among residents (Adeniyi, 2023). This perceived threat often translates into increased public demands for enhanced security measures, greater police presence, and more stringent surveillance policies (Obi, 2024). However, these measures sometimes raise concerns about civil liberties and privacy rights. The interplay between actual terrorist activities and public perception is complex, as the latter is often shaped by indirect experiences, rumors, and social media narratives rather than factual incidents (Udo, 2025). This study aims to investigate the impact of terrorism threats on public perception of security in Oredo, exploring how these threats affect citizens’ sense of safety and trust in government institutions. The findings are expected to guide policymakers in balancing security measures with the protection of civil rights.

Statement of the Problem
Oredo Local Government Area is grappling with a significant challenge as terrorism threats adversely affect public perception of security. Despite limited evidence of actual terrorist attacks, the pervasive fear, fueled by media and social media narratives, has eroded citizens’ trust in the efficacy of security measures (Adeniyi, 2023). This discrepancy between perceived and actual risk has led to public anxiety and demands for more robust security interventions, which may infringe on personal freedoms (Obi, 2024). The current security policies appear insufficient in addressing the psychological impact of terrorism threats on the populace. Consequently, there is a need to investigate the factors that contribute to this heightened perception of insecurity and propose balanced strategies that can enhance public trust while respecting civil liberties (Udo, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of terrorism threats on public perception of security in Oredo.

  2. To identify factors that shape public fears regarding terrorism.

  3. To recommend strategies that balance enhanced security measures with the protection of civil liberties.

Research Questions

  1. How do terrorism threats affect the public perception of security in Oredo?

  2. What factors contribute to the public’s fear of terrorism in the area?

  3. What measures can be implemented to improve public confidence in security without compromising civil liberties?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Terrorism threats significantly heighten public anxiety and reduce perceived security.

  2. Media coverage plays a crucial role in shaping the public’s fear of terrorism.

  3. Balanced security policies that protect civil liberties will improve public trust.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the influence of terrorism threats on public perception of security in Oredo. The findings will assist security agencies and policymakers in developing strategies that address public fears while safeguarding civil rights. By understanding the dynamics between perceived threats and actual security measures, the research will contribute to more effective and balanced security policies, ultimately enhancing public confidence and social stability (Adeniyi, 2023; Obi, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the impact of terrorism threats on public perception of security within Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State. It is limited to perceptions influenced by local media and social narratives, without a detailed analysis of actual terrorist incidents.
